BMS Design Launches Advanced 20-Tonne Servo-Controlled Fatigue Test System

BMS Design Ltd is pleased to announce the successful commissioning of our new 20-tonne servo-controlled hydraulic fatigue testing system, developed to provide high-accuracy cyclic load testing for the certification and validation of mechanical components and assemblies.

Designed for demanding engineering applications, the system is capable of performing over 5 million fully controlled fatigue cycles, making it suitable for long-duration endurance testing across a wide range of industries including automotive, motorsport, construction, defence, rail and offshore engineering.

Currently Supporting Lloyd’s Register Certification

Our latest project involves carrying out 1.5 million fatigue cycles on a critical bend stiffener mechanism as part of an independent certification programme. The testing is being undertaken in collaboration with Lloyd’s Register, ensuring the procedures, data collection and results meet recognised industry standards.

Testing is performed at our dedicated facility in Stockport, where every aspect of the test is monitored and recorded to provide complete traceability.

Precision Servo-Controlled Testing

The hydraulic test rig has been developed to deliver repeatable, highly accurate cyclic loading with complete control over the testing parameters.

Key features include:

• 20-tonne bidirectional load capacity

• 190 mm programmable stroke in each direction

• Capability for 5 million+ fatigue cycles

• Closed-loop servo hydraulic control

• Independent calibrated pressure sensors controlling load in both directions

• Adjustable test speed and programmable acceleration/deceleration ramps at the end of each stroke

• Continuous data logging of:

  • Applied load

  • Stroke position

  • Distance travelled

  • Cycle count

  • Individual stroke timing

  • Test duration

• Three-phase hydraulic power unit developed in partnership with Flowtech

This level of control enables accurate simulation of real-world operating conditions while producing high-quality data suitable for engineering analysis and certification.
