The Fred Whitton Challenge is a gruelling 112 mile sportive challenge ride for charity around the Lake District, run in memory of Fred Whitton.

“With just 10 days notice and no training it will be just as much of a mental ordeal as it will be physically.”

It starts & finishes at Coniston, and the route includes the mountain climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott & Wrynose passes.

Torches, drones and an electric Le Mans racing car are all test-beds for a new kind of “structural battery”, BAE Systems has said.

The batteries use carbon fibre and can form part of the body of a device.

By effectively building the power source into the fabric of an object they can save weight.
